Attitude Challenge - Learn the Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Learn the Signs and Symptoms of DepressionAs we continue the journey of developing a healthy attitude, we must address the importance of being able to recognize the signs and symptoms of depression.

Everyone feels blue from time to time. It's when that low mood lingers that we need to be concerned. Major depression is an episode of sadness or apathy that lasts two weeks or longer, and is severe enough to interrupt daily activities. Each year, 15 percent of Americans suffer from some sort of depression, including one out of five women and one out of eight men. The disease accounts for at least half of the nation's suicides.

Experts believe genetics plays a major role. Having a parent or sibling with depression triples the risk of developing the disorder. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months or even years.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • Irregular sleep patterns
  • Frequent awakening in the middle of the night
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Inability to function at work or school
  • Lack of energy or constant fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety or hopelessness
  • Increased physical problems such as headaches, digestive disorders or pain
  • Excessive crying
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Loss of interest in usual activities
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness

There are many ways to treat depression. With appropriate treatment, 80-90 percent of those suffering can be helped. (What other illness treatment has a success rates that high?) The first step is recognizing the symptoms in yourself or a loved one, and seeking help.
